Equal Earth App Support
Equal Earth supports iPhone and iPad running iOS or iPadOS 17 or later, and Mac running macOS 14 or later. The atlas, country comparison, Arrange mode, Game, and Map Studio work offline. An internet connection is only needed when you choose to open an external website or use an online file destination.
Create a custom map
Open Map Studio and choose Create a map or one of the 10 palette presets. Use Text for a title, subtitle, footer, country labels, and a legend. Use Colors for the paper, ocean, land, border, and text colors. Use Countries to search for a country and assign its color. “Use default country color” restores the base land color for that country.
A map supports a title of up to 100 characters, a subtitle of up to 180, a footer of up to 160, and six legend categories with labels of up to 40 characters. Undo and redo are available in the editor toolbar.
Choose Done in the editor toolbar to save the design in the local map library and close the editor. Open a saved map to keep editing it. A saved map's context menu includes Duplicate to create another version.
Export an image or editable design
In the editor's Export panel, choose an image width and select Export PNG. Available dimensions are 2400×1600, 4800×3200, and 7200×4800 pixels. Select a destination in the system file picker. Larger images take more time and memory; if an export fails, try a smaller width and check that the chosen destination is writable.
Choose Export editable map to save a JSON file that retains the map's editable colors, text, legend, and settings. On another device, open Map Studio, choose Import Map, and select the file. Import creates an editable copy. Equal Earth does not automatically synchronize your library across devices.
PNG files are finished images. Use the JSON design when you want to reopen the map for editing. Map Studio JSON files and Arrange layout JSON files represent different features; import each through its corresponding screen. Map Studio design imports are limited to 2 MB.
Arrange and compare countries
Use Arrange to move countries and experiment with the world layout. The app saves arrangements on this device. Use undo or redo to revise changes, Restore original position for an individual country, or Reset all positions to restore the layout.
Use Compare to inspect selected country shapes at a shared map scale. Area values are approximate map-geometry measurements unless an external source is specified. Some small island symbols are enlarged. The atlas includes 241 countries, territories, and source regions rather than 241 sovereign states.
Troubleshooting
If a saved map cannot be opened, preserve a copy of any exported JSON design and note the exact error message. The app avoids replacing an unreadable map library. A file made by a newer app version may require an app update.
If a PNG looks different in another application, check that it is shown at its original aspect ratio and has not been cropped or stretched. Exported colors and text match the design preview.
For help, use the WAHUP contact page and include “Equal Earth app,” your device model, operating system version, app version, and the steps that led to the problem. A screenshot or sample file is optional; remove any personal text you do not want to share. No account or password is required to use Equal Earth.
